Is it possible to get broadband internet in a country-farming like community atmosphere?

I Have this Aunt that live out in the Country – farming like place in St. Charles , Iowa (aka close to winter set/ bevington)
She want to switch her internet to from the old fashion dlal-up to to something broadband I not sure available in place like where she lives.

Cable is probably not possible. Some other possibilities for her to check: availability of DSL from her phone company; satellite (e.g. Wild Blue); wireless service (e.g. Verizon). IMHO caable offers the fastest and best connection but not everyone can get it. Anything is better than dial-up.

  1. Check to see if she can get cable internet from her local cable TV provider.

If not, then her other choice would be satellite internet. As this implies, you use a satellite dish (the small ones – like you use for satellite TV) for internet. While your download speeds are a lot better, it’s not without its problems. For one thing, your uploads are still done over dialup. For another, some online applications won’t work properly because of the delays from having to bounce your signal from the ground to the satellite, and back down again. This delay makes online gaming impossible.

But for basic things – like email, and simple web browsing – satellite internet will work just fine. At any rate, anything’s better than dialup.

You can get satellite internet or cable internet without having to subscribe to that company’s TV service.

  2. Yes, if the customer premises is within with the acceptable DSL distance from the switch, if fiber can be installed, or a wireless Internet is available.

  3. i live 36 miles from the nearest town and get pretty good internet service by satellite. My bird is Wild Blue and billed through the local REA (electric company). Hughes net is a similar service.
