As internet service providers begin to offer faster speeds, a new area of competition has begun. Initially, there was a race to provide internet service at the fastest possible speed. Of late however the speed race has outstriped the demands of consumers’ hardware. This created a new consideration for the internet service provider. The bandwidth cap is rapidly becoming the new battlefields where companies will be forced to compete.

There are market price limitations on monthly bandwidth. While users may sometimes feel like there is a secret conspiracy stopping them from getting the bandwidth they want at a comfortable cost, in reality there are massive hardware costs involved in getting data from the internet to your computer at the speeds we’ve become accustomed to. On the bright side, though, prices are typically determined by the amount a customer is willing to pay for a product. As it stands, the prices being charged by most internet service providers seem to be acceptable. However, a change in consumer behavior looms on the horizon. This inevitability threatens to annihilate the present comfortable foundation on which service providers build their business plans. The normal consumer will inevitably want to see on-demand high definition television content on their computers. This will spell the end of television as we know it.

While cable companies might have a vested interest in forestalling the inevitable by limiting monthly bandwidth, they will be unable to force this price control on the market forever. Wireless internet is being made available nearly everywhere at blinding speeds. This will make it nearly impossible for this media transition to be prevented.

This is wonderful news for the consumer. As companies start to boast that they will give you more bandwidth for your money, these caps will go up very quickly due to market pressure. Companies that offer hardware to internet service providers will need to lower their prices in turn. This is the nature of the pricing mechanism of the market.

With all the various ways to transfer data, there must be a huge focus on value. For the consumer who plans to view high quality content, this will represent a dramatic improvement to the quality of life. High quality content leads to higher bandwidth demands.

These bandwidth limits will also affecthave an impact on the quality of content made. Most current media files are compressed to meet bandwidth limits. When it’s possible to send more data faster, these limitations would become immaterial. This could result in new advancements in music recording software. Why not use large music files if they can be transferred very quickly? The same logic would apply for video files and any other content that people may attempt to share online. If providers can transfer bigger files, then movie files should be available in better quality. Over time this will permit for serious growth in the quality of audio and video files.

Online games will share in this expansion as well. As data transfer rates explode, you can count on game developers to take full advantage of the extra bandwidth. Online games may never need to use the same amount of bandwidth as streaming video or music, but it’s a certainty that the demands of gamers will increase at the same pace.

There is an exciting future for online content. While many whine about current bandwidth caps, we are not far away from a race between providers to deliver the best value for the money. In the end, this will mean great things for the fans of high quality online content.
